Prayer Points For Knowing God

Praying That We May Know Him Better

“I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. And I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ to make you to be steadfast in your prayer points for knowing God. Furthermore, I pray the glorious Father may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I wish also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened …” Ephesians 1:16-18
I love how Paul prayed for his friends; so direct, so purposeful. He didn’t mess around.
If all you seek are prayer points for knowing God, then you are in the right place. In today’s passage we see Paul praying that God would give his friends wisdom and revelation and that the eyes of their hearts would be opened ultimately. This is to continue knowing God better.
I want to know God better and don’t want to be satisfied just knowing about  God better. To really know God is my desire. How i want the eyes of my heart to be completely opened…It would be my greatest joy to see the world how God sees it. I want to see people the way God sees them and I hope for my prayers for knowing God to be answered. I pray for wisdom in situations and the eyes of my heart opened so I can see what I’m really dealing with. So many times I need His revelation in my life.
His ways are not my ways and knowledge about God does not equal a relationship with God.  Take the Pharisees for example in Matthew 15:8:
“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Matthew 15:8
There is a difference between knowledge and relationship and a difference between knowing about God and actually having a personal relationship with Him.
Before I started dating my husband, I knew about Dirk. I knew facts like his name, how old he was, where he lived, what sports he played, what his interests were…etc.

Facts.

Then Dirk and I started dating. From there we spent more time together going on dates, talking for hours on the phone (ahhhh I’m sounding old now). We discussed a wide range of topics from who liked who to what we should wear to prom. Important world, changing topics, you know.
Yet, as the years went on and the more time we spent together, our relationship deepened and we went from shallow conversations to deeper ones. Discussing our goals, dreams and what we thought God wanted to do with our lives in totality.
With time, intentionality and commitment, our relationship grew deeper and deeper as we went from knowing about one another to actually knowing each other and loving each other.

So how do we “know God better?

Like with any relationship, it takes moving from the superficial knowledge level to actually spending time with God, reading His Word and spending time in prayer.
It takes commitment to the relationship, putting in the time and being vulnerable. Be honest with God when you pray. Tell Him how hurt you are and how you really messed up, how you lost your temper and said something you shouldn’t have said. Confide in him how you need to be comforted and reminded that he loves you. Let Him know how you’re thankful for second chances and for grace….yes, so thankful for grace.
As you spend time reading the Bible, learning and praying about knowing God more, He will speak to you through His Scriptures. You’ll be amazed at how His words will speak right to your heart concerning a situation you are in while providing you with wisdom and instruction. In addition, as you come to God and open up in prayer sharing the good, the bad….the ugly…your relationship will grow and you’ll see God working and revealing Himself in your life like never before.

Overiew

So in a “Paulish” fashion, I’d like to close with a prayer over you because you are near and dear to my heart and because I too want us to strive to know God better together:
“Dear God,
Thank you for these sweet friends you’ve blessed us with here at Love God Greatly. Thank you for their love for you and their desire to be in your Word. I pray today, Jesus, that they will grow in their knowledge of you as they deepen their love for you and your Word. Open the eyes of their hearts, Jesus, and help them to see you more clearly in their lives. Give them wisdom and revelation to live passionately and boldly for you. We have but one life to live for you, God, so help us not to live in fear. However, to live in and through your love. Help us to see with your eyes, to trust you and know you better. We don’t want to stay in shallow, superficial relationships. In conclusion, I pray you help us to keep our eyes focused on you and our lives surrendered to you. For your glory, move powerfully through us! Amen!”
