The Summer season is officially over and for many, the rat race has begun in earnest. As workers return to work and students begin the academic year, it is good to seek the Lord’s protection as a cover for all that we do. Psalm 121 is short and focused on this request; it is thus easy to personalize in prayer. Here is an expanded prayer based on this reassuring psalm.
Psalm 121: The LORD the Keeper of Israel. (A Song of Ascents).
1I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come? 2My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
3He will not allow your (my) foot to slip; He who keeps you (me) will not slumber. 4Behold, He who keeps Israel (insert name) will neither slumber nor sleep.
5The LORD is your (my) keeper; The LORD is your (my) shade on your (my) right hand. 6The sun will not smite you (me) by day, nor the moon by night.
7The LORD will protect you (me) from all evil; He will keep your (my) soul. 8The LORD will guard your (my) going out and your (my) coming in from this time forth and forever.
PERSONALIZED SCRIPTURE PRAYER
Father I come in the name of your Son, Jesus to You, the Source of all that I am and have. I lift my eyes above my earthly circumstances and worldly securities, and look towards the heavens with expectancy, confident in you whom I serve. I choose to look beyond my spotty faith, and unto your unquestionable faithfulness. Heaven is your throne and the earth is your footstool, so the help that I need in all that I pray for and all that I do, can only come from you, even as you use any of your creatures or creations to deliver that help. In prosperity, I will never forget you as my help; in times of trouble, I will recall you as a very present help.
My God, I acknowledge you as my Keeper and my Preserver. No matter what I go through or where I am, you are the one who directs my steps. Even when the enemies strike at my heels, your power prevails to hold me up and prevent my foot from being moved. Not only do you give your angels charge over my body to watch me and prevent me from hurting my feet on the stone (Psalm 91:11-12), you personally preserve my soul and the graces you have poured into my life through your son, Jesus. I go from day to night in confidence that you are watching over me every second and secure in the knowledge that unlike human guards, you are not capable of being tired or indifferent, therefore cannot slumber or sleep. Alleluia!!
You who generously cause the sun and moon to shine on the good and bad will never allow these highest powers to hurt your children. As you kept the Israelites in the wilderness with a cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night, so you protect me on my life’s pilgrimage. You are everywhere and your presence is all around me like my shadow. You shade me from the glares and burns of the wicked and your spirit within me protects me from the evils of prosperity and adversity.
Glorious King, You have mercifully provided hope of eternal salvation for all souls through the painful death and resurrection of your Son and will jealously preserve the souls of those who believe in Jesus from all evil. I acknowledge that this commitment means that you will do and allow whatever is necessary to keep my soul in your grace, safe from the dominion of sin and evil influences. While you gladly honor your word and keep my person safe, it is the ultimate preservation of my soul for a glorious eternity that is of the uttermost concern to you. Thank you for the sacrifice of your Son to that end.
All-seeing Father, You are the one who keeps me safe as I go and come every single day; my security does not lie in any man or human system. Just as you guard my soul in private, you keep my public activities within your purview. Because of your infinite reach, I can never be outside your watch. I praise you for the many dangers you have preserved me from, those that I am aware of and those I never knew about because you took care of the situation before it could engulf me. Thank you for your firm promise to preserve me from ALL evil, and for turning every affliction around for my good. May your sure protection be done unto me according to your word, in the name of your Son Jesus. Amen. Thank you for hastening to perform your established word every time I repeat it to you.
